Earlier this year, I posted a TikTok video about a money story that had been buried deep!  So deep, I didn’t even realise I had one.

Whenever the topic of money stories came up, I’d usually say, “I don’t have any.” Nothing major came to mind. But then, one day, I remembered a prayer my parents used to say over us as children:

“May you never have cause to sell your possessions.”

It was a prayer said with love, with the best intentions, meant as a blessing.  But over time, I’d internalised it as something more absolute: that selling my possessions was somehow shameful or a sign of desperation.  Even though I had drawers full of things I no longer used, even after creating eBay and Vinted accounts, I could never bring myself to list anything.

I would give things away happily. But sell them?  Something felt off.

Until I realised… maybe that was my money story.

So, with my son’s support, I finally listed my very first item on eBay.

And it sold! 🎉

But then came the plot twist…
Just after I posted the item to the buyer, I got an alert: eBay had suspended my account.
Cue panic!
Had I fallen for a fake site? Was this a scam?
Worse still, I thought: See? I knew I shouldn’t have sold it.
That old belief reared its head immediately.

I didn’t reach out to eBay for weeks. It was easier to retreat into “This is why I don’t sell things” than to chase it up.

Eventually, I decided to query it.  It turns out it wasn’t a scam, eBay just needed some additional verification.

I sent off the documents, and they confirmed it could take up to 21 days to process the payment. I finally got confirmation that the funds would be released… weeks after I had posted the item.

But the real lesson wasn’t about eBay or delays.  It was about me and what I had attributed to the experience!

🧠 The Deeper Truth About Money Stories

Sometimes we think discovering our money story is enough.  But the truth is, there’s work to do after that.

Because even once I recognised where that belief came from, it still shaped how I responded.  The delay fed into my narrative: Selling is bad.   This is why I don’t do it.

But had this been any other situation, say, a delayed bank transfer for example, I wouldn’t have written off the entire system. I’d have followed up, sorted it, and moved forward.  So that’s what I’m doing!

Once the payment lands, I’ve promised myself I’ll list another item.  Why?  Because this isn’t just about selling things.  It’s about rewriting stories that no longer serve me!

✨ What’s Your Story?

I share this because you might have a similar story; one that’s hidden under phrases like:
“I’m just not good with money,”
“I don’t do business,”
“I don’t charge for things,”
or even “I can’t increase my prices, they won’t be able to afford it.”

Sometimes we frame these thoughts as kindness or caution, but they can be rooted in deep beliefs around worth, value, and money.  And those beliefs can quietly shape how we price our services, what we offer for free, or whether we even allow ourselves to receive.

What money story might you be carrying and what has it stopped you from doing?

Drop your thoughts in the comments or share this with someone who’s unearthing old beliefs too.
Let’s keep working through them together. 💛
